Do Cosmetics and Makeup Age the Skin?

How make up creates skin lines is a topic of some debate.  Some people don’t believe it’s true .  In the past , a lot of people said that the sun was not a cause .  Now, we know better.  But, are cosmetics bad for your skin today and will it cost you your looks tomorrow?  Those are the questions discussed in this article .

Although painting the face has been done for thousands of years , the role has changed dramatically .  The popularity of foundation and the frequent use of makeup by women in the US and Europe can be linked to Max Factor, a theatrical makeup artist, who created “Flexible Greasepaint” in 1914.

Theatrical greasepaint was known to clog up the pores .  It felt greasy and most actors and actresses removed it as soon as the performance was over .

To solve these disadvantages , Max came up with “Pan-Cake”.  The main ingredient was talc.  It was applied to the skin with a wet sponge and could be layered without caking.  Imagine Max’s surprise when actresses started to wear it during their free time , as well as when they were performing on stage .

Pan-Cake was patented and themarketing began in 1937.  By 1940, about one third of US women owned it and used it on a relatively steady basis.  That’s just a little bit of history.  Now, let’s talk about how makeup creates wrinkles and could cause serious health problems .

Ever since the 1960s, it was common knowledge that talc is a poison .  In the early seventies, Skin MD researchers found particles of talc embedded in 75% of the ovarian tumors they examined.  Nonetheless , talc is still classified as “generally recognized as safe for use in cosmetics” by the US FDA.  Max Factor’s original talc-based recipe is still available from Proctor and Gamble.

What does ovarian cancer have to do with how make up causes wrinkles?  Carcinogens cause damage to the cells of the body.  It is the same kind of trauma caused by overexposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun ; the kind that can cause carcinoma and plays a significant role in the aging of skin .  Scientists normally call it free radical damage.

Dermatological researchers have proven that there are more free radicals in older than in younger skin.  The amount of antioxidants existing in older skin is much lower than it needs to be in order to maintain free radical damage under control.

Dermatologists and Skin MD have said in recent years that free radical damage is a significant cause of wrinkling and other outward signs of aging.  How make up causes wrinkles is by causing free radical damage.

Today there are natural cosmetic ingredients that will not cause the damage.  You can also use creams with antioxidants that help protect against the damage.

The cosmetic brands that have a zinc-oxide base seem to be the safest ones .  Zinc oxide is widely recognized as safe enough to eat .  Talc is not.  Creams containing CoQ10 are the most efficacious for protecting against and even reversing free radical damage.

This is not the complete story of how make up causes wrinkles .  There are other concerns such as the inadvertent kneading of the skin that takes place in order to apply eye makeup.  It’s just that free radical damage is the most dangerous .  It’s also something that can be easily avoided.

Choose your skin care and cosmetics brands carefully and always use an antioxidant-rich moisturizer underneath.  Try to avoid products with mineral oil and petrolatum, as they can cause excessively oily skin.   Everyone would be safer to avoid those things.  They may contain cancer-causing substances, too.
